Singer, activist and ‘Grease’ star Olivia Newton-John dies at 73

Chart-topping singer, actress and activist Olivia Newton-John has died, according to a post on her Instagram page from her husband, John Easterling. She was 73.

"Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends," the note reads. "We ask that everyone please respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time."

Originally diagnosed with breast cancer in the '90s, Newton-John was in remission for more than 20 years before her cancer returned in 2017. "Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer," continues the post.

"Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer," it concludes. "In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in her memory to the @onjfoundation."

Newton-John is survived by her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi; Easterling, whom she married in 2008; as well as a sister, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in 1948 in Cambridge, England, Olivia was the granddaughter of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Max Born. When she was five, her family relocated to Melbourne, Australia. By her teen years, she'd landed her big break, winning a talent contest on the TV show Sing, Sing, Sing.

By 1966, Olivia had a deal with Decca Records, but her major breakthrough wouldn't come until 1973, with the country-flavored hit "Let Me Be There." That same year, the Academy of Country Music named her its Most Promising Female Vocalist. In 1974 the Country Music Association agreed, crowning her its Female Vocalist of the Year in a move that sparked controversy among the genre's traditionalists.

The next year, Olivia's career would gravitate more toward the pop side, as she released one of her signature songs: "I Honestly Love You." It won both Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 1974 Grammys.

Generations of fans -- particularly young girls -- would come to identify with Newton-John as she took on her most iconic film role in 1978, playing Sandy alongside John Travolta's Danny Zuko in the big-screen adaptation of the musical Grease. The two would become one of cinema's most beloved couples, performing the duets "You're the One That I Want" and "Summer Nights" together. Olivia also scored a Grease solo hit with "Hopelessly Devoted to You."

In 1980, Newton-John teamed up with the legendary Gene Kelly for the roller skating fantasy Xanadu. Though it failed to be "Magic" at the box office, it was destined to become a cult classic and also gave Olivia another chart-topping hit from its double-Platinum soundtrack.

Newton-John and Travolta rekindled their onscreen romance for Two of a Kind in 1983. While the film wasn't successful, once again Olivia's music was. The soundtrack went Platinum and "Twist of Fate" was a top-five hit.

On the small screen, Olivia would become a music video pioneer, turning her super-sexy single "Physical" into a campy romp through saunas, aerobics and workout rooms. The clip propelled the song to 10 weeks at the top of the chart, and "Physical" won the 1982 Grammy for Video of the Year.

All told, Newton-John charted 10 #1s and sold more than 100 million albums, continuing to work right up until the recurrence of her cancer forced her postpone her 2017 tour. Earlier, she'd staged a well-received Las Vegas residency at the Flamingo for two years, starting in the spring of 2014.

In her eyes, Olivia was certain to see both her family and her humanitarian work as her greatest accomplishments. She gave birth to her daughter, Chloe, in 1986, and later helped establish the Healthy Child, Healthy World organization after Chloe's childhood friend died of a rare form of cancer.

After going into remission in 1992, Newton-John worked to raise awareness for breast cancer, recording multiple albums that addressed the issue and eventually establishing the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Center. It opened in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia, in June 2012.

Lady Gaga releases teaser for ‘Joker 2’, all signs point to her playing Harley Quinn

ABC/Randy Holmes

Lady Gaga has found her next acting role -- this time in the upcoming Joker 2She confirmed her casting on Thursday, hinting she'll be playing the villainous Harley Quinn.

"Joker: Folie à Deux," Gaga announced on Instagram -- the film's title -- and shared a brief teaser of the upcoming thriller set to debut in theaters in 2024.

The video, set to a red backdrop, features Gaga's all black silhouette -- except for a little red heart on her right eye -- dancing to Fred Astaire's "Cheek to Cheek." The heart's placement is in the same spot as Margot Robbie's interpretation of Harley Quinn, which appeared in several films, including 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

The snippet also sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker -- a role that landed him an Oscar -- also appearing as a silhouette.

His shadow is posed like a marionette smoking a cigarette while Gaga, who is dressed in a long dress with puffy sleeves, strikes a menacing pose. The two shadows then join together in a dance, with the Joker's markings around his eyes and Harley's heart on her cheek highlighted in red.

The Grammy winner was first rumored to star as Harley Quinn of the upcoming Joker sequel earlier this summer, following reports the franchise will flirt with more musical elements. While this teaser seemingly confirms the rumors, she has yet to explicitly name the character she's playing in the upcoming movie.

The upcoming sequel will be directed by Todd Phillips, who previously produced A Star Is Born, the 2018 remake that starred Joker producer Bradley Cooper and Gaga.

Joker: Folie à Deux laughs its way into theaters on October 4, 2024.

The first Joker movie grossed over $1 billion worldwide and picked up a pair of Oscars, including Phoenix's Best Actor win.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are expecting a baby!

The Cravings cookbook author, 36, announced the news in an Instagram post on Wednesday, revealing that she's expecting another baby after undergoing in vitro fertilization, or IVF.

"The last few years have been a blur of emotions to say the least, but joy has filled our home and hearts again," Teigen wrote alongside a photo of herself showing off her baby bump. "1 billion shots later (in the leg lately, as you can see!) we have another on the way."

"It's been very hard keeping this in for so long!" she added.

Teigen, who is already a mom to 6-year-old Luna and 4-year-old Miles, expressed her apprehension around sharing her pregnancy news and talked about the nerves she would feel after each appointment.

"Every appointment I've said to myself, 'OK if it's healthy today I'll announce,' but then I breathe a sigh of relief to hear a heartbeat and decide I'm just too nervous still," she said. "I don't think I'll ever walk out of an appointment with more excitement than nerves but so far, everything is perfect and beautiful and amazing."

It's unclear if Teigen will be having a baby boy or girl, but many of her fans and friends flooded her comments section sharing their warm wishes and congratulatory messages, including fellow "Cravings" co-author Adeena Sussman.

"We're waiting for that little bebé with open arms," Sussman wrote.

The announcement comes nearly two years after Teigen shared the heartbreaking news that she suffered a miscarriage. A few days before sharing the news, she told her followers that she had been admitted to the hospital due to "excessive bleeding."

Teigen and Legend were going to name that baby Jack.

You’re related to WHO? Kevin & Frankie Jonas host ABC’s new game show ‘Claim to Fame’

ABC/John Fleenor

On a new ABC game show airing Monday night, 12 people who are related to celebrities will compete to cash in on the fact that they've got a famous family member. Called Claim to Fame, the show -- co-hosted by Jonas Brothers member Kevin Jonas and his little brother Frankie Jonas -- boasts a $100,000 prize.

"We have 12 contestants living in a house together that are all related to a famous relative, but they don't know who is related to who. And so the idea is you've got to maintain your secret identity for as long as you can," Kevin explains to ABC Audio. "So [there are] a lot of twists and turns, a lot of figuring out who's related to people by the games we play with them and, y'know, giving away any information as it comes along."

"There's a lot of strategy involved, but it's also just really fun," Kevin adds. However, he thinks the contestants didn't realize quite how cutthroat the competition would be.

"[They] went into this thing going, 'Y'know, I'm going to meet a lot of people that have similar circumstances as me!'" he laughs. "So they thought they were making a lot of friends ... and I'm not sure everyone stayed friends the whole time!"

Kevin says he and Frankie were "kept in the dark about who was related to who" so they could play along. As a result, Kevin says, "The reaction ... from us [when we start] understanding who's related to who is very genuine."

"But then off set, we're having pools as to see whose guesses are correct," Frankie laughs. "And surprisingly, pretty much consistently, we were both massively incorrect!"

Claim to Fame debuts Monday, July 11, at 10:01 p.m. ET on ABC.

The first teaser trailer for Harry Styles’ ‘My Policeman’ is finally here

Courtesy Amazon Prime Video

Only a few months to go before Harry Styles' new movie, My Policeman, arrives in theaters, and to hype fans further, Amazon released the first teaser trailer on Wednesday.

The teaser flips through some of the more emotional moments of the upcoming drama, which features Harry as a closeted officer named Tom. The R-rated film also stars The Crown's Emma Corrin as a schoolteacher named Marion and The Last Kingdom's David Dawson as a museum curator named Patrick.

The teaser shows a conversation between Patrick and Tom, as the latter describes how a painting of the ocean makes him feel. "I can sense the waves.  You know how strong they are, like swimming in rough surf.  You feel they could crush you or take you under," he describes. "You just have to let it take hold of you."

The movie is about a forbidden love between Tom and Patrick, as the movie is set in 1950s England when homosexuality was prohibited. While Tom marries Marion in an attempt to fit into society, Patrick suffers the consequences when he is outed.

My Policeman is based on the book of the same name. After it debuts in theaters on October 21, it will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on November 4.

Could Lady Gaga be the next Harley Quinn?

Neilson Barnard/Getty Images

Lady Gaga is in early talks to play Harley Quinn in director Todd Phillips’ followup to the 2019 blockbuster, Joker, according to The Hollywood Reporter; and get this -- the sequel is said to be a musical.

Last week Phillips posted a pair a pair of photos, one of which was of the apparent cover of the script, with the title, Joker: Folie à Deux -- a reference to the medical term for an identical or similar mental disorder that affects two or more individuals, usually members of the same family. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the title seems to imply that Gaga is being considered for the part of the Joker’s partner-in-madness.

A second photo in Phillip's social media post showed Joker star Joaquin Phoenix reading the screenplay, although sources tell THR that Warner Bros. has yet to close a deal with the actor.

Gaga's Harley Quinn would exist in a different DC universe than Margot Robbie's Quinn, which appeared in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, as well as several other films.

Phillips previously produced A Star Is Born, the 2018 remake that starred Joker producer Bradley Cooper and Gaga.

The first Joker movie was a box office smash, grossing over $1 billion worldwide. It also picked up a pair of Oscars, including a best actor nod for Phoenix.
