Venus and Serena Williams‘ journey to tennis superstardom is told through their father’s eyes in the forthcoming movie King Richard.

Ahead of the film’s premiere, the athletes told Entertainment Weekly they were very excited when they learned Will Smith was interested in playing their dad, Richard Williams.

“It was like, ‘Oh my God this movie is going to be the real deal,'” said Venus, 41. “Whatever film [Smith’s] in, it’s the real deal. We got the sense of this is gonna be big, this is gonna be a serious film.”

Serena then revealed that, while their father does serve as a narrator, the story focuses on one particular person.

“I feel like the film actually tells [Venus’] story, in a way that no one can ever really tell what she went through in being the first Black player to really step out there,” Serena said.  “You see the impact that it has had and all the people that are coming up after myself and Venus.”

“There would be no Serena if there wasn’t a Venus,” the tennis star added. “Venus is so humble, she doesn’t really take credit for that. She burst open that door and I ran through.”

Venus countered by insisting of her sister, “There’s no me without her, and I could have never done what I’ve been able to achieve on the court without her.”

King Richard premieres in theaters and on HBO Max November 19.

NeNe Leakes shares the final conversation she had with her late husband Gregg

ABC/Paula Lobo

It’s been a month since Gregg Leakes lost his battle with cancer. Ahead of the somber anniversary, NeNe Leakes opened up about what his final days were like.

Speaking with People, the Real Housewives of Atlanta alum shared the last conversation the two had before he passed away from colon cancer on September 1.

“The last five days before his passing was really beautiful,” Leakes explained. “All of his children were there. His best friends were there. Our closest friends were there. We all sat with him around the clock.”

One of the final things Gregg did, says Leakes, was make a file of all the things he handled so family would not be in the dark about paying bills or who to contact for important financial matters.

“That took a lot of strength,” NeNe said.

The 53-year-old continued, “We talked a lot, and we made peace with what was happening” before revealing that her husband’s final words weren’t a goodbye but, rather, a promise and a request.

“I’m not going to leave you. God is going to bless you,” she recalls him saying. “He said he wanted me to move on with my life.”

“I told him I wouldn’t have chosen another husband other than him. I said, ‘I married you twice, crazy man,'” said Leakes. The couple wed in 1997 and filed for divorce in 2011.  Two years later, they remarried.

“He took a deep breath, and then he stopped… I thought I would be scared, but I just held him and kissed him,” Leakes described before admitting she’s still having difficulty processing that Gregg is gone.

“I keep thinking to myself he’s away on a trip and he’ll be right back,” she confessed. “I’m still waiting for him to come home.”

Billy Porter reveals why he wants to say “thank you” to Elizabeth Taylor

ABC/Jeff Neira

If Billy Porter ever had the chance to speak to the late Elizabeth Taylor, he knows exactly what he’d say to her: “Thank you.”

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Porter reacted to being honored by the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation with their prestigious Commitment to End AIDS Award. Saying he was “humbled” by the honor, the Cinderella star couldn’t hold back the overwhelming appreciation he has for the late actress.

“You know, I have been gay a long time. I’ve been out since the ’80s, when it wasn’t so popular. HIV was around, Elizabeth Taylor was one of the first people in the public eye with celebrity to show the world how to love, to show the world what unconditional love looks like,” Porter said. “And all these years later to be honored in her name is… takes my breath away.”

And, although Taylor passed before the two could meet, Porter says that he would tell the actress, “Thank you,” if ever given the chance.

Porter, who revealed in May that he’s been HIV positive for 14 years, reflected on his advocacy work and what this award signifies in his journey.

“To be seen, inside of a space where I was not for a long time and not only not seen, but dismissed from the conversation… it is breathtaking to me that in the choosing of myself, in the choosing of my truth and my authenticity, my life has transformed and it’s magical,” he explained, noting that it also reflects a positive shift in public opinion.

Said Porter, “There is an evolution that’s going on. We’ve come a long way. And I know sometimes that’s hard to see because there’s so much negativity, but we also have to remember how far we’ve come.”
