‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ beats expectations with $21 million box office debut

Crunchyroll/Toei Animation

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero easily topped the weekend box office, grabbing an estimated $21 million in North America. It’s the third best opening of all time for an anime film and more than double the last Dragon Ball film’s opening in 2018.

The second of this week’s new major releases, Idris Elba’s killer lion drama Beast, opened with a whimper instead of a roar, earning an estimated $11.6 million.

Brad Pitt‘s Bullet Train fell to third place after two weeks at number one with an estimated $8 million, bringing its current domestic haul to $68.9 million. Internationally, Bullet Train brought in another $12.1 million, for a worldwide total of $150 million.

Top Gun: Maverick came in fourth, delivering an estimated $5.8 million, bringing its domestic tally to $683 million. That moves it past Avengers: Infinity War‘s $679 million as the sixth biggest-grossing in North America.

Rounding out the top five was DC League of Super Pets, $5.78 million in its fourth week of release. The animated superhero comedy film has earned $130 million globally to date.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck officially marry again in Georgia

Pierre Suu/GC Images

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck tied the knot for a second time at Affleck’s estate in Riceboro, Georgia on Saturday in front of friends and family.

“Guests were gathering at The Perry Lane Hotel [in Savannah] to head to Jennifer and Ben’s wedding.” a source tells Entertainment Weekly. “Everyone is dressed in white with most women in white dresses and gowns, and most men in white suits, a majority in linen material, but the dress code features a wide variety. Some men are in white shorts and sneakers and there is a female guest in a white fringe leather jacket and sparkly cowboy hat.”

The guest list included filmmaker Kevin Smith, who ditched his signature jerseys in favor of a white t-shirt, shorts and loafers, topped off with a white vest and jacket.

“This is as formal as I’ve been dressed since maybe my First Communion when I was 7,” he tweeted.

Last month, J-Lo and Ben — who were first engaged in 2002, but called off the wedding — ran off to Las Vegas and got hitched at the Little White Wedding chapel.

Brad Pitt reaches $20.5M settlement with Katrina victims over housing

Brad Pitt and his Make It Right Foundation reached a $20.5 million settlement with victims over faulty homes built in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, according to Page Six.

Global Green, an environmental nonprofit, has agreed to cover the settlement, which would rectify defects in the homes. The settlement needs a judge’s approval.

Residents of homes, built by the Make It Right Foundation, sued Pitt and his associates for defective design and building practices, breach of contract, and fraud. According to Nola.com, “many of the houses were poorly built with inadequate materials,” with the lawsuit claiming some of the homes “suffered from rain leakage that caused rot, structural damage and mold,” as well as “faulty heating, cooling and ventilation systems, plus electrical malfunctions and plumbing mishaps.”

While the Bullet Train star was the face of Make It Right, helping to raise millions of dollars to construct the homes that were sold for around $150,000 each, he wasn’t involved in the day-to-day responsibilities, according to Page Six. He stepped back in to assist when Make It Right proved itself to be incapable of fixing homes, which ultimately led to the lawsuit.

Pitt had previously petitioned to be removed from the 2018 suit, believing he should not be held responsible for the project’s actual construction.

‘The Bachelorette’ recap: A shocking and emotional departure rocks Gabby ahead of hometowns

ABC/Craig Sjodin

Gabby and Rachel’s journeys to find love continued amid the charming canals and tulip fields of Amsterdam on Monday’s episode of The Bachelorette, but with hometowns right around the corner, Gabby faced her toughest breakup yet.

Ahead of her one-on-one date with Nate, who has a daughter, Gabby, came to the conclusion that the complicated relationship she had with her estranged mother, made it impossible for Gabby to take on the responsibility of being a mother herself. That left her with no other choice but to send Nate home, leading to one of the most emotional breakups of the season.

“I take the potential of being a mom so seriously because of my past and at…times childhood was hard and parenting didn’t look like it does in other people and I’m terrified of maybe putting someone else in my position or maybe making the wrong decision,” the former Denver Broncos cheerleader shared in a confessional. “I have to weigh these options seriously,”

The news left Nate, who had a previous one-on-one with Gabby and seemed to be a frontrunner in the competition, with “a bit of heartbreak” and “confusion.”

“She’s going to be a hard connection that I don’t think I’ll be able to replicate,” he added, addressing the camera before boarding the car that would take him home.

Later, on a group date in Amsterdam’s Red Light District, Gabby’s men displayed their kinky side, while Rachel’s group proved their love with a cheese weightlifting competition. Rachel’s rose went to Tyler, while Gabby’s afterparty was canceled after Logan tested positive for COVID-19, eliminating him from the rest of the competition as well.

Earlier, a one-on-one date between Rachel and Tino ended with him getting a rose.

Monday’s rose ceremony saw Ethan and Spencer eliminated from Rachel and Gabby’s respective groups.

Here are the men whose families Gabby and Rachel will meet:

Rachel:

Aven, 28, a sales executive from San Diego, California
Tino, 28, a general contractor from Playa Del Rey, California
Tyler, 25, a small business owner from Wildwood, New Jersey
Zach, 25, a tech executive from Anaheim Hills, California

Gabby:

Erich, 29, a real estate analyst from Bedminster, New Jersey
Jason, 30, an investment banker from Santa Monica, California
Johnny, 25, a realtor from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
Nate, 33, an electrical engineer from Chicago, Illinois

The Bachelorette returns Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

‘Bullet Train’ tops weak box office for the second week with $13.1 million

2022 CTMG/Scott Garfield

The Brad Pitt action-comedy Bullet Train topped the box office for a second straight week, earning an estimated $13.1 million and bringing its domestic tally to $54 million.

The news wasn’t as good for the box office overall, which marked its lowest-grossing weekend since February. In fact, Bullet Train was the only movie to crack the $10 million plateau, and of the weekend’s three new entries in wide release, the slasher film parody Bodies Bodies Bodies and the thriller Fall failed to crack the top five, while the Diane Keaton-led Mack & Rita, didn’t even make the top 10.

DC League of Super-Pets and Top Gun: Maverick were still battling it out for second place as of Sunday night, earning an estimated $7.17 million and $7.15 million, respectively. We’ll have to wait for the final tallies to see who wins.

Fourth place was another dead heat between Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder and Jordan Peele‘s Nope, both with about $5.3 million, though Love and Thunder has a slight edge. Nope, which opened overseas this weekend, grabbed an estimated $6.4 million, far below Peele’s last film, Us.

Anne Heche’s family says actress “is not expected to survive”

Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic

The family of Anne Heche, who remains in a coma following a fiery car crash in Los Angeles last week, says the actress is not expected to live.

“We want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and prayers for Anne’s recovery and thank the dedicated staff and wonderful nurses that cared for Anne at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital,” the family wrote in a statement to KABC Thursday night.

“Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma, in critical condition. She is not expected to survive,” the statement continued.  The actress is also reportedly severely burned.

The family added that Heche, 53, had chosen to donate her organs, adding, “she is being kept on life support to determine if any are viable.”

The statement closed by saying, “Anne had a huge heart and touched everyone she met with her generous spirit. More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work — especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love. She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and dearly missed for her light.”

Heche was severely burned when her blue Mini Cooper crashed into a Mar Vista home August 5 and burst into flames, setting the house on fire.

ABC News learned on Thursday that a test of Heche’s blood was positive for unspecified narcotics, though authorities said it wasn’t yet known whether those drugs were illegal or whether they were administered by emergency personnel. Heche could face felony DUI charges for the accident should LAPD investigators refer the case to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.
